Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style?

“I love Jules from the blog Sincerely Jules because she definitely inspires me with her simplicity […] she’s more modest in the way that she dresses, but is still very sexy and very fun. I don’t know if you count Urban Outfitters as inspiration, but I’ll walk past stores and be like, ‘man, why didn’t I think of that? I have similar clothes! I can put them together like that!’ So that, and maybe Free People inspires me, too. But then again, I feel like these are just stores that I like versus what I actually dress like.

Where do you like to shop?

“I like to shop at H&M [and] Urban Outfitters. I feel like those are my main stores, and Brandy Melville has basic t-shirts that I like.”

How would you describe your sense of style?

“I think it ranges, and I think there’s part of it that’s a bit more boho—the long cardigans, the holey things. I used to do more patterns, but now I don’t at all anymore, which is interesting. I think my style is kind of classic, but a little bit more modern, simple, and neutral.

Why did you choose this particular outfit?

“I go through self-esteem waves and I fluctuate with weight a lot, so I’m in my thinner side right now, and it makes me self-conscious. So I usually like things that cover me, which is why I like this long cardigan, because it covers me and I feel safe in it. I chose not to do anything too tight because I think anything that accentuates my thinness can make me feel very insecure in public. Right now how I choose my outfits in general is centered around items that are a little bit looser.

What fashion advice would you give others looking to improve their style?
“I would say be original. And it’s hard when I look at mainstream stores and say that I love that style, but just go for what you like. I’d say don’t try to conform to trendy things just because it’s popular. If it’s something that you think flatters you or makes you feel good, that’s what matters. I go between buying a ton of relatively cheap things so you have more of a variety, and saving and purchasing really nice, high-quality pieces that you know will last. Treat yourself!”

What are your favorite trends right now?

“I love the ‘90s theme that’s coming back. I love the short, plaid skirts [and] the denim skirts that button up the front. And I think wearing t-shirts with just tank dresses over them is interesting. I like the overalls, I think those are fun, and I like the ‘40s looks that are coming back—the small backpacks and classic, collared, button-down dresses that you can see a lot of places now.

If you had $1,000 to spend on any clothing item or accessory what would it be?
“High-quality, thigh-high, black, suede heeled boots. I see them everywhere on Instagram and blogs, but those would be so nice because they would accentuate my legs and would go with everything.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests?
“Museums [and] Netflix. I tried to paint more this summer. I’m getting more into scrapbooking, too, so just crafts in general. I’m trying to be a little bit more adventurous and [go] on hikes. What I love and what I should do more of is just walking around new towns and going exploring.

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why?

“It would definitely have to be Jules from Sincerely Jules.

Elements of Chelsea’s Outfit

1. Layers

With autumn on its way, layers are the perfect way to be prepared for all kinds of weather. Chelsea’s long, slouchy cardigan from Urban Outfitters is a warm, relaxed contrast to her mom’s structured button-up shirt and Nordstrom jeans.

2. Black Choker

‘90s throwbacks have been flooding the fashion world lately and this black choker from Etsy is the perfect nod to the comeback trend.

3. Cage Heels

When you want to switch up your standard flip-flops, but it’s still too warm for boots, these Steve Madden cage sandals are the perfect way to go. The open sides and lace-up detail are on trend, with the cutouts allowing your feet to breathe. A slight heel elevates any outfit and gives you an extra spring in your step as you walk to class.

4. Sentimental Jewelry

Although the rest of her outfit is kept simple, Chelsea’s rings really stand out with their delicate details and cool-colored stones. With one of them belonging to her mother and the other from a long-ago trip to the mall, both rings hold meaning and add some shine to a classic outfit.
