Alyssa, a student at West Virginia University, was spotted making her way through the downtown campus with this show-stopping patchwork denim handbag and funky footwear. Her look proves that the right accessories truly make the outfit.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Comfort and shoes. I’m all about being comfortable! I consider it such a fashion success to find a cute shirt I love that is also super comfortable. I also am a shoe fanatic. I love finding unique shoes in whimsical colors… I often plan my outfits around my shoes!”

Where do you like to shop? “I love boutique shopping. I follow a ton of cute ones on Instagram and just keep an eye out for cute pieces. I’m also a big fan of Free People and Anthropologie, and I have a lot in my wardrobe from Old Navy and J. Crew.”

How would you describe your style? “I don’t think I could define my style to a category. When I look in my closet, my clothes don’t all fit the same mold, but I like it that way. I have lots of stripes and lots of peplum, but otherwise it’s just a hodge-podge of different styles.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I love to layer, even in summer. The jeans I chose are very comfortable and go well with most anything. I’m very busy, so comfort is great for being on-the-go like I am. I love the floral print of the shirt and the lightweight cardigan allows me to stay cool while also layering like I love. I chose the purse because of the unique denim print. When I first got it, I was worried it would never match anything, but now I think it’s my favorite part about it! It gives a pop to the outfit and [it] definitely stands out.”

What advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Just have fun with it! Don’t try to fit a mold or follow the crowd. Just wear what you like and what you are comfortable in. Your style is your style, not everyone’s around you, so own it!”

Do you have any favorite trends? “Bell-bottom jeans! I just got a pair and I absolutely adore them; I think they are so fun! Also, rompers and jumpsuits are a staple in my closet.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? “I really like Kate Spade. Her purses are so fun and colorful.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “My favorite thing to do is hang out with those I care about. I love meeting new people and just making new friends as much as possible. I also recently started a blog and love it. I really enjoy just being able to share my thoughts.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be? “Sadie Robertson. She has such a fun and unique style that I love.”

1. Floral Blouse + Gray Cardigan

As we move into September, we see fashionistas like Alyssa pulling from both summer and fall wardrobes to create a complete outfit with contrasting elements. Her bright and textured Anthropologie blouse and soft Old Navy cardigan are perfect layered together. The best part? This look also combats the weird hot-and-cold weather this time of year.

Why stop at layering just your clothes? Alyssa shows us just how to be the queen of layering bracelets and necklaces. She chatted to me about her mission trip to Haiti, where she had gotten one of her bracelets, so it was most certainly a conversation piece! She paired it with mismatched metal jewelry and gems for a cool look that’s all her own.

3. Denim Patchwork Handbag

You guys, this bag is killer! Alyssa’s bag is the statement piece of her entire ensemble. It looks so different from the typical Kate Spade purse. It takes a true trendsetter to play around with patchwork denim.

4. Brown Flats

These loafer sandals have so much detail. From the ankle strap to the woven fabric on the toe, they are a unique piece. Alyssa shows them off by cuffing her jeans–a very good choice on her part.
