Professional, stylish, AND warm – it’s possible!

Dressing professionally can be a bit of a minefield, especially as a millennial with an interest in fashion. You feel compelled to stay on top of the trends but also to rely on classic staples; you want to look youthful and stylish, but you also want to look professional; you want to start investing in pieces but you’re also on capital-B Budget.

Then, when winter rolls around and your office is either FREEZING or your commute is treacherous (or both, hello), it can be even more frustrating as fashion takes a backseat to warm and dry.

I’ve weathered (har) a couple of winters in the office and I’ve found that each of those winters I’ve found myself reaching for a couple of key pieces that live at the intersection of fashionable and weather-appropriate. Here are the 3 winter work outfits that will keep you stylish and cute, all while staying warm and cozy:

Fluffy Cardigan

Products: Cardigan – Nordstrom, Blouse – H&M, Earrings – Nordstrom, Lipstick – Amazon, Tights – H&M, Skirt – Land’s End, Booties – MANGO, Bag – Topshop

I am a sweater fiend – ask anyone – and I have a fat stack of them in my closet that are in HEAVY rotation during the winter months. But, there are some days were I can’t stand the thought of wearing another bulky sweater to keep warm, and I want to wear some of the slinky button-downs I’ve relegated to my “spring/summer” wardrobe. Enter the fluffy cardigan

Nothing feels more like a big hug of hygge than a fun-textured cardigan, which breathes a little bit of youthful life into an otherwise somber skirt-and-tights combo. On the other hand, the conservative cream color tones down a red floral blouse that may seem too loud for winter.

Pair with some updated but otherwise conservative pearl earrings, an embroidered tote, and a dramatic plum lip for a fashion-forward (and still warm) office look to break up all those sweater days.

Sweater Dress

Products: Sweater Dress – Nordstrom, Bag – Amazon, Earring – Trouva, Jeans – H&M, Perfume – Nordstrom, Rings – Revolve, Lipstick (in “Brain Teaser”) – Bloomingdale’s, Booties: Macy’s

An oversize sweater dress in a neutral color is my secret weapon for dressing for work in the winter. Like dresses, they’re an almost no-brainer outfit (dress, shoes, done) but like sweaters they bring the warm and cozy factor.

I actually like treating sweater dresses like long sweaters and pairing them with button-downs and jeans for a bit of proportion play, so I’ve paired this sweater dress with a neutral pair of black jeans, though leggings or tights would work just as well. Ankle booties and a glossy bag in a sunny cognac color warm up an otherwise cool neutral look. Some geometric earrings and rough-hewn stone rings add a little bit of earthy bling; a spritz of a warming perfume and a nude lip complete this cozy but polished look.

Ankle Wellies

Products: Bag – Nordstrom, Necklace – Nordstrom Rack, Eyeliner – Sephora, Blazer – Mango, Pants – Nordstrom, Wellies – Nordstrom, Blouse – Uniqlo

This winter has been an odd mix of a lot of snow and some warm days with lots of rain, so it can really be a coin toss to what you need, footwear-wise. I’ve found myself turning again and again to the pair of ankle wellies I bought on a whim at Target. These puppies are totally watertight, and while they’re not the best when it comes to tread, you can definitely find pairs that are better suited for snow, too. Bonus – they have been super on-trend lately and are popping up all over the place.

You can wear these the same way you would wear any pair of black ankle booties, like with purple-y plum pants, a simple black top, and a patterned gray blazer. Add a little bit of edge to a basic look with a collar necklace and a fierce cat eye. Grab a leopard print bag for a bit of pattern play and you’re ready to own any snowy or rainy work day.

What do you think?
